The Devastating Truth of College Admissions...
As we have seen through countless documentaries and articles, the college application and decision process is based on many unfair factors. Do people believe that college admissions needs a change for the greater good?
We all know that there needs to be a change in the admissions process, however, as history continues to repeat itself it gets harder and harder to change these factors. Think about it as a twisted and weirdly phrased SAT problem: You can get help if you're admitted into these colleges, but you might not be admitted if you need help. Like Elizabeth Myers Houston said, "We do accept some students on the edge of admissibility because they can contribute to the costs of an Oberlin education." Although this is unfair to the people who aren't too rich, the colleges just want to get donations from these students who can afford the tuition without aid and also give amazing donations to the school.
Furthermore, many of these top college admission officers go on to say, "When I would be in a committee that was deciding not to admit an otherwise well qualified applicant due to financial need, I would find myself thinking, 'That could have been me.'"
So if you're a high school student who is lucky enough to have won this demographic lottery and thus improved your admissions odds some, keep the running, but you are also the beneficiary of enormous, economic privilege.
